Meet the Horwoods
Lane & Jenny Horwood are the owners of Fly By Night Land & Cattle. While Lane is out and about tending to daily tasks of raising a Registered & Commercial Red Angus herd, you can find Jenny keeping up with their two beautiful daughters Kit & Kinley, all while working away in her leather & quilting shop and keeping the home fires burning.
Lane has been deeply invested in cattle ranching from a very early age. In 2019, Lane purchased a ranch in Carlsbad, Texas, down the road from his hometown of Sterling City. This is where it all began with his interest in the Red Angus cattle breed.
It didn’t take very long when Lane first met with Jenny at a steakhouse in Lubbock, Tx that he just might have found what the ranch was lacking….. a wife! They hit it off well, talking about their family ranches, and all other things of life. Lane & Jenny were married soon after on March 20, 2021.
Fast forward a few years, they sold the ranch in Carlsbad, and moved the headquarters of Fly By Night Land & Cattle to the new ranch in Sterling County that was purchased with the help of Lane’s two brothers Lyle & Lathen Horwood. All together as a family, through several partnerships, they produce both Red & Black Angus Cattle, and market cattle for both the commercial and registered cattlemen alike.

Our GOALS
In 2019, when Lane went out in pursuit of putting together the foundation for the new Red Angus herd, he had specific qualities that, even today, we take into very serious consideration. They needed to be within a moderate frame that fit the dry, arid climate of West Texas and could produce a superior genetic profile, all while showcasing a strong phenotype - looking and possessing strong traits in calving ease, growth, and feed efficiency. These calves also had to put forth excellent carcass data in the ribeye area and marbling.
One of Lane’s favorite times of the year is when he gets to keep back steers to finish out and market beef directly to the consumer. He collects the data of average daily gain and dry matter intake along with keeping the calf produced on the ranch and then onto a customer’s family supper table.
We also pursue front pasture heifers that produce strong maternal characteristics, excellent foot structure, and can produce year after year in the West Texas climate.
